Joshua David Balthazar Erasmus, born in Durban, 1999 is a multi-disciplinary artist receiving a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts and Honours in Fine Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Campus.
Starting to draw with crayon, pencil or any drawing tool around is the beginning of his endeavor in arts, Balthazar is constantly learning and exploring technique, medium and style.
Despite having formal training/education in the arts much of his technique is self taught specifically in oil painting. Whilst making work in the methods of traditional fine art, he combines this with his context of the contemporary era, occasionally using elements such as the post-digital and post-internet context, either in aid of producing works or within the work’s subject matter.
Currently his predominant mediums include oil and acrylic painting, printmaking, graphite and charcoal drawing, sculpture and mixed mediums.
His use of art pastiches reference art itself as a means of the work produced becoming intertextual and self aware. Exploring religious themes, pop culture and the meta age of information, he aims at combining these elements to create art which provides a broad subject matter for audiences.
